A republic, not a democracy

The Weimar Republic had an admirable constitution, better than the Germans of its time deserved.

They wrecked it with stupid communism and then stupid Nazism, and the arrogance of irreconcilable militarists, monarchists, and aristos.

Our parties and political factions have become almost as dangerous to our American republic as those Germans, what with the extravagance of their propaganda, their contempt for the integrity of constitutional processes, and their shameless lying about the thing's very meaning.

Constitutional disobedience undermines respect and encourages increased lawlessness.

It may eventually encourage rebellion.

And I say this though most of the lying has been done by my party for the sake of things I support.

Successful republics rely on obedience and respect.
