A lousy deal

Obama’s Iran deal falls far short of his own goals

If you really meant to stop Iran going nuclear it's a lousy deal.

Which is not to say the West could have done better at a cost the West was willing to pay.

Netanyahu: Iran Nuclear Deal 'Would Threaten The Survival Of Israel'

He views it as imperative to stop Iran getting nukes.

The price he is willing to see paid by the West is much higher than the price the West is willing to pay.

He needs Israel's nukes to remain a plausible deterrent to every enemy in the region, and ending that is why Iran wants nukes in the first place.

That and to diminish the threat of US regime change action against Iran.

Would an Iranian Bomb be an "existential threat" to Israel?

Well, it would deny plausibility to any Israeli threat to use nukes in most if not all scenarios, leaving the whole question of Israel's security and even its viability to the arbitrament of conventional forces, only.

So, yes, I suppose it would, except so far as the West could be counted on to guarantee Israel against all comers, including a nuclear Iran in the heat of a crisis or outright war.

But bold talk notwithstanding the Western powers cannot be counted on to be mad enough to willingly bear just any burden or pay just any price to guarantee the survival of any one or any thing but themselves.

And the whole point of Zionism was to create a Jewish state that would not have to count even on the good will, much less on the sacrifices, of others to guarantee the survival of the Jewish people.

True, it has never really succeeded at that.

But Bibi and even many Americans in and out of the classe politique to this day have drunk the Zionist Kool-Aid.

And Bibi thinks the two-state solution or an Iranian nuke would place Israel at the mercy of benevolent Western powers, benevolent Christian powers, to an altogether undeniable and hence historically, ideologically, and morally unacceptable extent.

How can people who subscribe to the Zionist myth that Jews cannot be as safe in Europe or even America as in Israel accept that Jews can be safe in Israel only if America and Europe choose to make them so at a very high price to themselves, perhaps an implausibly high price?

If Jews cannot trust Europe and America not to kill them in Europe and America, how can they trust Europe and America to save them in Palestine?
