Courage is a privation

Napoleon is by no means the only military leader in history to be described as heroes commonly are.

Such men are said to be fearless, they are unafraid, they lack fear.

They are the high iron workers of the battlefield.

The cowards, the "leg cases" Lincoln hated to hang but hanged all the same, are the agoraphobes of the battlefield.

They are hanged to make those who can control their fear obey.

Over the top!

For the same reason, certain battalions of French mutineers of 1916 were decimated.
