Hollande tries to straddle

It's this simple.

The Russians prioritize keeping Assad in power over the fight against ISIS.

The US prioritizes his removal.

Hollande wants to prioritize the fight against ISIS, leaving the fate of Assad's regime to be settled later - which means acceding to the Russians in the near term and letting Assad stay at least until the nascent ISIS state in Iraq/Syria is stamped out.

This question splits both the right and the left in Europe and America, the new cold warriors and the democracy exporters who so celebrated the imaginary Arab Spring on the one side and the realist anti-Islamists and anti-cold warriors on the other.

Hillary as well as those now in power in the White House and the Department of State are both cold warriors and democracy exporters, Hillary even more than the others.

But of course even she is not as bad as the Republican neocons who have so constantly ached for war both against Russia in Ukraine and against Iran over nukes.
