The Wiz for Christmas

Cultural appropriation is a tool of subversion.

Think of the people putting up Idris Elba to play Bond, or even a girl.

What are they really up to?

Well, imagine the uproar if someone - say, Mel Gibson - was preparing to make a movie about MLK with a white actor chosen to play the role, and not in blackface.

Just fiction, you know; not actually history.

So it's OK, right?

Ho!

The culture wars in America are not only directed against the hegemony of Christianity and its sexual morality but more broadly against that of white, Occidental civilization, several of whose features are widely loathed by so many of the warriors.

Think of capitalism, monogamy, and especially the infuriating weight of thousands of years of achievements in all fields of culture of white people, mostly male.

I hear echoes of students, mostly female, disproportionately colored, chanting, "Hey, hey, ho, ho. Western Civ has got to go."

Think of all those students, for example, mostly women nowadays and disproportionately not white, studying English Literature, devoting semester after semester to the productions of white men from Chaucer to Robert Lowell, from Beaumont and Fletcher to Eugene O'Neill.

And then trying to wash off such a soaking bath of white testosterone by assiduously studying Marxist, black, radical feminist, and gay Lit Crit.
