Bugging the Pharisees

Jesus cast out devils, performed healing miracles on the Sabbath and otherwise repeatedly waived Sabbath law, and claimed authority to forgive sins.

Very annoying.

But not the main thing or the heart of the reason Jewish authorities, according to John, wanted to kill him.

According to John 9:22, anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah was to be expelled from the Synagogue.

Jesus (John 10:22-38) claims to be not only the Messiah but the unique Son of God.

He says (John 10:30) "The Father and I are one," for which the people pick up stones to kill him for blasphemy, (10:33b) "You, a mere man, claim to be God."

Besides, at John 11:48, in the high council, the leading priests and Pharisees say,

"If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation."

To which the high priest, Caiaphas, said (11:50) "it's better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed."

Pilate is reluctant to punish Jesus, but

19:7 The Jewish leaders replied, "By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God."
