Father Jonathan chides pro-choice Catholic voters

Liberals apart, it is the universal teaching of Christianity of all denominations that abortion is morally of a piece with murder and ought, like murder, to be illegal and punished.

Many Democratic Catholic politicians tell voters they accept the Church's teaching but believe as well that the choice whether to have an abortion is a matter of conscience that must be left to the individual woman, her spiritual counselors, and her medical advisers.

Such Democrats, people like Nancy Pelosi, Tim Kaine, and Joe Biden, claim in effect to accept that abortion is murder but deny it should be unlawful or punished.

Their position exemplifies that of millions of voters without whose complicity legal abortion could not survive in America.

Father Morris here chides those voters by attacking Tim Kaine.

It is not out of bounds to compare that pro-choice position to pre-Civil War politicians or voters claiming to agree with abolitionists that slavery is wrong but insisting the choice whether to own slaves must be left to the conscience of the individual.
