Trump Says Maybe '2nd Amendment People' Can Stop Clinton's Supreme Court Picks

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump raised eyebrows Tuesday when he suggested there is "nothing" that can be done to stop Hillary Clinton's Supreme Court picks, except "maybe" the "Second Amendment people."

"Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment," Trump said to the crowd of supporters gathered in the Trask Coliseum at North Carolina University in Wilmington.

"If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks.

"Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don't know."

Solicitation of murder apart, he's right about her position, allowing for hyperbole.

If I am not mistaken, she agrees with the longstanding liberal view that it essentially protects the right of the states to maintain armed and trained militia, and not a citizens' right to keep and bear arms for any other purpose.

Of course, you may well ask why the amendment speaks of a right of the people if what it's about is a right of the individual states.

On my own view the 2nd Amendment conjoins a demonstrable falsehood about the role of militias with a guarantee of the individual right to keep and bear arms against federal infringement.

The guarantee itself contains no comment or qualification concerning the purposes for which individuals may rightfully keep or bear them.

Or perhaps it conjoins a conditional guarantee of that right with the false assertion of its condition, leaving the guarantee an undetached consequent, I can never quite be sure which.

Personally, I would be OK with repeal of the amendment.

I who write that am a gun owner.

I am less comfortable with judicial lying about it, but better that than have lots of guns in the hands of drunks and fools on the party-boat.
