Papers, please

When he robbed Petit Gervais, Valjean had a yellow convict's passport.

It is a question of an internal passport, or identity papers.

Now he has a clean one in the name of Monsieur Madeleine, and we don't know how that happened, though of course we know it is an assumed identity.

He is wanted for the robbery of Gervais, but also for burglary and theft from Bishop Bienvenu, an inconsistency Hugo does not explain.

Still in the midst of the affair of Champmathieu.

Reading Les Miserables.

I saw that film several times on TV when I was a kid.

Broadcast TV.

Well before cable, let alone the Internet.

Update, describing convict Brevet at the trial of Champmathieu, the narrator says "It must not be forgotten this happened under the Restoration."

Meaning what?
