The Enigma

Valjean and Cosette, newly arrived in Paris, flee their lodgings as Javert, who has sniffed them out, pursues through the night.

They hide in a convent garden where they hear singing.

It is the Convent of Petit-Picpus, at which, two years before, Valjean, as Mayor Madeleine, had got old Fauchlevent a position as gardener.

Fauchlevent, the man whose life he had saved while he was Mayor Madeleine by lifting a cart on his back, at the price of exciting Javert to suspect his identity.

Before the affair of Champmathieu.

Fauchlevent offers shelter and secrecy.

The voices of virgins, Hugo says, are noticeably especially sweet, pure, and celestial.

Javert, we are soon told, by the way, is a monarchist.

Les Miserables.
