The horrible Thenardiers, inn-keepers paid by the agonized sacrifices of Fantine to give a home to her daughter, Cosette, have reduced her to a beaten and viciously exploited, 8 year old Cinderella.
They have no time for church, have never taught Cosette to pray, and join their drunken guests in revelry both blasphemous and obscene.
