Unaccountable opinions

Kant thought he needed faith in God to allow himself faith in immortality.

Why?

I don't see it. 

And why immortality?

Aquinas thought for humans to be eternally happy would require a miraculous change of human nature.

I don't recall whether Kant thought the same.
