I read somewhere the other day that ISIS is reintroducing slavery.
The European empires suppressed slavery in Muslim lands only with the greatest difficulty.
They suppressed many of the cruelties of Sharia.
They suppressed suttee in India, and forced a practical domestic truce between Hindus and Muslims so unnatural to the latter that when the British left partition ensued in a great flow of blood.
They suppressed human sacrifice in Mexico.
They crushed the Mahdi to stop his slaughter and because he sought to reintroduce slavery wherever he might drive out the Infidel Europeans and their influence.
They permitted Christian missionary activity but never sought forced conversion.
That was how Europeans "forced their values on conquered peoples."
And when the Europeans left - if they did - results varied.
One result lately has been ISIS.
Where Europeans did not leave results have in some ways been mixed for locals.
But in general they are more numerous, healthier, wealthier, and better educated (a) than when the Europeans arrived and (b) than they would have been, in all likelihood, had the Europeans not arrived, or not stayed.
And while nobody is trying to totally get rid of the modern civilization brought by the Europeans the Muslims seem, more than any others, to be having a very hard time getting on board.
