Congo Ebola Outbreak Spreading Faster Than Ever-WHO

Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak is spreading at its fastest rate yet, eight months after it was first detected, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

Each of the past two weeks has registered a record number of new cases, marking a sharp setback for efforts to respond to the second biggest outbreak ever, as militia violence and community resistance have impeded access to affected areas.

Less than three weeks ago, the WHO said the outbreak of the haemorrhagic fever was largely contained and could be stopped by September, noting that weekly case numbers had halved from earlier in the year to about 25.

But the number of cases hit a record 57 the following week, and then jumped to 72 last week, said WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier. 

Previous spikes of around 50 cases per week were documented in late January and mid-November.

The current outbreak is believed to have killed 676 people and infected 406 others. Another 331 patients have recovered.

In the past two months, five Ebola centres have been attacked, some by armed militiamen. 

That led French medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) to suspend its activities in two of the most affected areas.

Another challenge has been a mistrust of first responders. 

A survey conducted last September by medical journal The Lancet found that a quarter of people sampled in two Ebola hotspots did not believe the disease was real.

And you thought (rightly, of course) that anti-vaxxers were delusional.

Remember when so many Democrats insisted quarantine was unnecessary and too harsh for people exposed to Ebola?

Man Charged After Allegedly Breaking Measles Quarantine To Go To Gym

A Wisconsin husband and wife are facing charges after authorities say the man violated a measles quarantine with his wife’s help so he could go to the gym.

Jeffery Murawski, 57, and Christine Bennett, 58, of Brookfield were each charged last week with one misdemeanor count of exposing the public to a communicable disease for the alleged violation that took place last year, according to a copy of the criminal complaint.

Murawski had been ordered to stay inside his home from April 26 to May 7, 2018, or until he was deemed noncontagious by the Waukesha County health department.

A family member told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the quarantine was over his possible exposure to the virus. 

The county health department was unable to confirm that he had been vaccinated, the family member claimed.

On May 1 of last year, several days into his quarantine, an off-duty Waukesha County deputy reported seeing Murawski walk into his wife’s place of work with a gym bag and then back out to her car where she was waiting.

This was despite deputies being ordered to remain outside his home at all times to ensure he complied with the quarantine, which was described as the least restrictive. 

Immediate family members living at his home were allowed to come and go because they had been vaccinated, according to the complaint.

Murawski, when stopped and confronted by an on-duty deputy, allegedly said that he snuck out of his house by hiding in his wife’s car because he was “going crazy” from being inside.

A spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reached by NBC News suggested that the man’s quarantine was likely due to recent measles exposure.

“I can tell you when someone is quarantined, it is not because they have the measles, it is because that person was exposed and does not have proof of immunity,” spokeswoman Elizabeth Goodsitt told the news network. 

“Someone with measles would be isolated.”

Both Murawski and Bennett face up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500 for the misdemeanor charges, according to the complaint filed March 1 of this year.

Le virus Ebola qui sévit en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) a atteint pour la première fois une zone urbaine où un cas a été confirmé par les autorités et l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS), qui parle d'une "situation très préoccupante".

"Un nouveau cas (...) a été confirmé à Wangata, l'une des trois zones sanitaires de Mbandaka, une ville de près de 1,2 million d'habitants de la province de l'Équateur dans le nord-ouest de la RDC", a indiqué l'OMS.

"L'arrivée d'Ebola dans une zone urbaine est très préoccupante et l'OMS et ses partenaires travaillent ensemble pour intensifier rapidement la recherche de tous les contacts du cas confirmé dans la région de Mbandaka", a déclaré le Dr Matshidiso Moeti, directeur régional de l'OMS pour l'Afrique.

Mbandaka étant située sur le fleuve Congo et reliée à Kinshasa par de nombreuses liaisons fluviales, "il y a un risque réel d'une amplification nationale et régionales" de l'épidémie, a mis en garde Peter Salama, directeur du Programme de gestion des situations d'urgence de l'OMS.

"Nous estimons à plus de 300 personnes (ceux) qui ont été en contact direct ou indirect avec des personnes contaminées par le virus Ebola à Mbandaka", a déclaré à l'AFP un médecin d'un hôpital général de la ville.

Lundi dernier, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, directeur général de l'OMS, avait affirmé que tout était désormais prêt pour le déployer et espérait pouvoir diffuser le vaccin "à la fin de la semaine".

Le 8 mai, les autorités de la RDC avaient déclaré une épidémie d'Ebola dans le Nord-Ouest, près du Congo-Brazzaville.


L'OMS a compté au total 44 cas (3 cas confirmés, 20 probables et 21 suspects) et 23 personnes sont mortes, selon un porte-parole de l'OMS.

A new case of Ebola has emerged in an urban area of Democratic Republic of the Congo, a troubling development in the country's new outbreak of the contagious and often fatal virus. 

Until now, the outbreak had affected a rural area.

Dr. Oly Ilunga, Congo's Minister of Health announced Wednesday that a suspected case was confirmed in Mbandaka, a city of around 1.2 million people, and the capital of the Équateur Province.

WHO is deploying around 30 Ebola experts to the outbreak zone and says they will work with locals "to engage with communities on prevention and treatment and the reporting of new cases."

Most Ebola cases are spread through person-to-person transmission, according to the WHO. People can become infected with bodily fluids or secretions — like blood, stool, saliva or semen — if they enter the body through broken skin or a mucous membrane. 

As a result, health workers and family members of infected people are at higher risk of infection.

But an experimental Ebola vaccine — two years in the making — is providing some hope in the fight against the disease.

As NPR's Nurith Aizenman has reported, the vaccine proved enormously effective during a large-scale trial in Guinea during the waning months of a recent massive Ebola outbreak in West Africa. 

And now global health experts are rushing to get the vaccine into Congo.

The Ministry of Health says it received 5,400 doses on Wednesday. 

Health care workers and others who have been in contact with infected people will be targeted first.

If Trump notices this at all, he will doubtless respond by recommending a travel ban on all sub-Saharan Africans.

Ebola persists in the semen of male survivors much longer than previously thought, a study shows.

The report in the New England Journal of Medicine found two-thirds of men had Ebola in their semen up to six months after infection, and a quarter after nine.

A separate study, in the same journal, reports Ebola being spread through sex with a survivor six months after their symptoms had started.

Men who have survived Ebola are being encouraged to wear condoms.

Finding the virus in Ebola survivors months after recovering is not unheard of.

Previous outbreaks have shown the virus can survive in semen and it was found in the eye of a US doctor two months after recovering.

This can pose health problems for the patient, but is there a risk of spreading the virus?

Men are advised to use condoms indefinitely until more is known.

But there are now so many survivors in West Africa - around 13,000 - that if there was a major risk then we would know about it.

Dr Ben Neuman, a virologist from the University of Reading, told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme that the outlook for Ms Cafferkey was good and it was unlikely the virus remained infectious.

He said: "Once the virus is removed from the blood once, it tends to retreat into the hard-to-access components of the body. It'll hide in places like the back of your eye or breast milk."

He said the effects of the virus on the body could last for up to two years, although it was difficult to know how long it could actually persist.

Sure, they are.

Another four U.S. healthcare workers were flown back to the United States for monitoring for possible exposure to the Ebola virus, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

The return of the four U.S. healthcare workers brings to 16 the number of Americans who have returned to the United States from Sierra Leone since Friday, the CDC said.

That includes a healthcare worker in critical condition who is being treated for Ebola in a Maryland biocontainment unit run by the National Institutes of Health.

Most of the healthcare workers are employed by the aid group Partners in Health.

Only one of the 16 has tested positive for Ebola. 

The rest are being flown to Atlanta and Maryland, which have special biocontainment units. 

They are all undergoing monitoring for Ebola in self-imposed isolation as they wait out the remainder of the 21-day Ebola incubation period.

Crowds destroyed an Ebola facility and attacked health workers in central Guinea on rumours that the Red Cross was planning to disinfect a school, a government spokesman said on Saturday.

Red Cross teams in Guinea have been attacked on average 10 times a month over the past year, the organisation said this week, warning that the violence was hampering efforts to contain the disease.

This is a particularly annoying, stupid piece by Joan McCarter at KOS.

Some parts of some American cities are like the favelas of Brazil.

By the time somebody from such a place who comes down with Ebola is called to the attention of the health care industry many others will have been exposed and it will be very, very hard to control contagion.

Particularly given it is now the position of the global and the American left that quarantine - mandatory confinement, alone or with others in the same case, of people who might have the disease, for as long as it takes to find out whether or not they actually do - is a racist violation of basic human rights.

We can't even get trained medical personnel to behave properly, and so far all efforts to make them behave have been undermined by the O administration and by the courts.

When the police try to enforce a 21 day quarantine of people who might have the disease in Ferguson what will Al Sharpton be saying?

Will they be yelling about Tuskegee experiments and insisting Louis Farrakhan told them all it's a racist plot to kill black people?

Absolutely everything the liberals and black leaders have done over the decades to justify and encourage black distrust of and hatred for white people and government authority will undermine desperately necessary public health measures.
