What unites young people against Obama and Trump

Maybe they just didn't dare write "What unites Trump and Obama against young people".

US President Donald Trump appears to be making it a central part of his re-election campaign. 

He has deemed cancel culture "far-left fascism", saying it is "driving people from their jobs, shaming dissenters, and demanding total submission from anyone who disagrees...is the very definition of totalitarianism".

Last October, former President Barack Obama challenged cancel culture and the idea of being "woke" - a term describing being alert to injustices and what's going on in the community - saying change was complex.

"I get a sense among certain young people on social media that the way of making change is to be as judgemental as possible about other people," Mr Obama said.

"The world is messy. There are ambiguities. People who do really good stuff have flaws."

Also in response to a question from Romney, Fauci was firm that we are more likely than not to have a vaccine in a year or two.

Nobody has said or even suggested we or anyone can remain in lockdown for that great a period.

So apparently Donald Trump wants to make this an election about what it means to be American. 

He’s got his vision of what it means to be American, and he’s challenging the rest of us to come up with a better one.

In Trump’s version, “American” is defined by three propositions. First, to be American is to be xenophobic. 

The basic narrative he tells is that the good people of the heartland are under assault from aliens, elitists and outsiders. 

Second, to be American is to be nostalgic. 

America’s values were better during some golden past. 

Third, a true American is white. 

White Protestants created this country; everybody else is here on their sufferance.

O gets on board with Medicare for All

Joe Biden led him to public acceptance of gay marriage.

Now he has come out for Medicare for All.

Obama, a centrist himself, abruptly announced that he had moved to the left now that he is out of office. He said,

I’m not sure either Schumer or Pelosi themselves could get behind these things, inasmuch as they are deeply beholden to the corporations. Of course, Obama wasn’t a leader on Medicare For All (single-payer) when he was actually in office.

But I think Obama’s speech demonstrates that even the old centrist warhorses among the Democrats are terrified that the blue wave won’t appear.

Kavanaugh's critics on the left contend his conservatism over the past 12 years on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit would lead him to rule against the Affordable Care Act.

Signs of his opposition to the law were plainly sufficient to satisfy Trump, who has long railed against the signature domestic achievement of President Barack Obama and has vowed to appoint justices who would overturn it. 

He has also taken consistent aim at Chief Justice John Roberts, who provided the fifth vote to uphold the law in 2012.

A Democratic strategist was asked today on TV which to prioritize at the expense of the other, if necessary, winning control of the senate or keeping Kavanaugh off the Supreme Court.

The question arises because some Democratic senate seats are up, this fall, that are for states that went for Trump.

Those senators are feeling pressure to not piss off their states' voters by voting against Trump's pick, though Chuck Schumer is trying hard to maintain unanimous Democratic opposition to him in hopes not all the Republicans will vote for him.

There is actually a chance that Schumer's efforts could prevent Kavanaugh's confirmation.

But the Dem strategist came down for winning control of the senate without a moment's hesitation, arguing the need for checks and balances.

As if letting Trump put the Supremes in his pocket, and on the Republica team, would not far more damagingly undermine checks and balances, and for decades longer, than continued GOP control of the senate for another two years.

As if putting a right winger on the Supreme Court who has publicly said the Supremes back in the day were wrong to rule Nixon had to honor the subpoena demanding the White House tapes just as the chickens of Russiagate start to come home to roost would not right away show us how bad things can be when the Supremes decline to either check or balance.

When Trump was mulling who to nominate and in the immediate aftermath of the choice of Kavanaugh, newsies repeatedly said that Democrats routinely undervalue control of the courts, and even the Supreme Court, as compared to the great importance Republicans assign to it.

Seems they are right.

Usurper

Trump has imposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada without going to congress for legislation, citing a provision in existing law allowing him to act for the sake of national security.

Though his usual cheerleaders support him, some officials insist there is no national security issue involved, and Trump's ludicrous insistence that bad trade deals are per se national security issues shows they are right.

Meanwhile, GOP legislative leaders will not even bring to the floor bills to restrain presidential power in this area.

This is a party and a president who endlessly and sometimes accurately whined, and still whine, that Obama unconstitutionally usurped legislative power.
