Shouldn't a novel be interesting?

Why is Zola's Nana supposed to be interesting?

I'm not saying it's a crashing bore, but it's not tremendously engaging, either.

But then it doesn't strike the modern reader as especially daring.

In his time it was quite shocking stuff.
