Charles the Hammer

At the Battle of Tours-Poitiers he saved the Occident from Islam.

For centuries, Christian historians rejoiced in this, and even post-Christians like Gibbon accepted their view of the battle's importance.

But perhaps only now that Islam, in all its brutal backwardness, has become the successor to Marxism as a global menace can even an atheist, looking back, realize he has to be glad of that victory, without qualification.

To an atheist living then it might not have made much difference.

To an atheist living now it makes a great deal of difference.
