Feminists are not liberals, and never have been

In saying this I take it that something very close to free speech absolutism is essential to liberalism, as is opposition to any effort to punish people for mere political advocacy.

And I do not at all mean to restrict that to punishment by the state, but also punishment by any sort of social sanction.

For a liberal, it is imperative that everywhere be a safe place to say what you think and what you want, about politics but also about any matter of opinion - supposing discussion of such things is appropriate in that place at that time, at all.

Despite the fact that people always have stupid, hateful, and dangerous opinions and desires.

That is not a common view among feminists, however.

Consider the recent controversy over The Atlantic hiring Kevin Williamson.
