"Media"

OK, I know "media" is a plural noun and you know it's a plural noun, and so does Susie Madrak.

But she also knows the community of bloggers and journalists has absurdly declared itself the arbiter of English grammar as well as meanings, and that community has fairly consistently insisted on using "media" as a singular form.

This is her title for her post.

Note the plural verb and predicate nominative.

And this is her first sentence.

Note the singular verb and the plural possessive pronoun.

Last night, it finally crystallized in my head: The media is doing a slow burn, not even over Hillary Clinton specifically, but over our refusal to accept theirs as the only legitimate opinion.

For the rest of her post she consistently treats "media" as a plural noun.

I have to suppose her first sentence was an effort to placate the impudent illiterates of the blogger/journo community, and that the rest of the post reflects her ingrained habit of correct usage.

I haven't noticed, but I'll bet singular "they" is all but impossible for her and she just can't bring herself to use feminine pronouns to refer to antecedents of indeterminate gender, at all.

Wikipedia liberals - and also the blogger/journo community, by and large - have opted for singular "they," already established in the speech of the vulgar in the days when the educated were committed to use of masculine pronouns without qualm.

Academic feminists (perhaps more often men than women) like to use feminine pronouns to refer to antecedents of indeterminate gender in place of the grammatically correct masculine ones, or to use slashed forms like "he/she" or "s/he".
