ABC and CNN insist this is really a thing

Why did we lower the voting age from 21 to 18, again?

Why the hell don't we push it back up to, like, thirty?

Young people are throwing coronavirus parties with a payout when one gets infected, official says

Some young people in Alabama are throwing Covid-19 parties, a disturbing competition where people who have coronavirus attend and the first person to get infected receives a payout, local officials said.

The parties are being held in Tuscaloosa, and infected people are urged to attend so others can intentionally contract the virus, City Council member Sonya McKinstry told CNN. She said she heard about the trend from fire officials.

Not a single word about stopping or punishing this stupidity.

It's not just the kids who are stupid, reckless, and irresponsible.

How to have a glorious fourth: stay home with at most immediate family. Don't go out. See no one else.

That's what the docs are saying.

Herman Cain was at the Tulsa rally. He now has the virus.

Trump today says he's OK with masks and you should wear one if you want to.

What he wanted to talk about was the jobs and unemployment reports.

4.8 million jobs were added this month, but that was all just furloughed people being called back to work.

Unemployment is down to just over 11 %.

Abbott in Texas is coming around (those fines are good) but is still behind what's needed.

What is he waiting for?

He's waiting for it to get so bad even Texans, Republicans, and twenty-somethings get the message.

So he can do what he needs to do and it will cause only a few terrorist attacks, riots, and bombings in Austin.

This is what most southern Republican governors are waiting for.

They are waiting for their voters' permission to do stuff.

Other voters, other people don't matter.

A remarkably stupid measure

City board backs end to off-street parking requirement

The Pittsburgh Planning Commission has endorsed a measure that would end the off-street parking requirement for new townhouses and row houses — a move designed to curb the proliferation of attached garages and driveways that some view as neighborhood killers.

Commission members on Tuesday backed a zoning amendment that eliminates the requirement for developers to include one off-street parking space per single-family attached unit.

Under current zoning, developers must provide at least one off-street parking space per single-family attached unit. They can go as high as four per unit.

In March, the Peduto administration introduced the proposed zoning change in an effort to “increase pedestrian safety and lessen reliance on automobiles.”

So now I join the growing ranks of those who think Bill Peduto is a stupid man.

Wolf acts. Not a word about enforcement, though.

Pennsylvania mandates masks for anyone who leaves their home amid COVID-19 spike

Face masks are now mandatory in all public spaces, according to an order signed Wednesday by Gov. Tom Wolf and state Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine.

The order requires masks to be worn inside where the general public is admitted and outdoors when a distance of 6 feet cannot be consistently maintained.

Also on Wednesday, a divided state Supreme Court ruled the GOP-controlled Legislature cannot force Mr. Wolf to end his coronavirus disaster declaration, handing the Democratic governor a victory that could be vital should cases surge again.

The mask order was made amid an uptick of new positive cases of COVID-19.

The state health department on Wednesday reported over 600 new cases of the virus, including 194 in Western Pennsylvania.

In Allegheny County, 110 were reported, the second straight day the county reported more than 100 cases.

. . . .

There are a few exceptions to the order, including for individuals with medical or mental health conditions or those with disabilities.

Exceptions also will be allowed for workers where a mask would be deemed unsafe, such as when operating equipment.

Children under the age of 2 also will not be required to wear a mask.

. . . .

Writing for the majority, Justice David Wecht emphasized that the court was not offering an opinion on Mr. Wolf’s response to the pandemic, but rather whether lawmakers could act without facing the governor’s veto.

The resolution “required presentment,” Justice Wecht wrote, “a key component of our Constitution’s balance of powers among the several branches of government, a balance that prevents one branch from dominating the others.”

The justices also ruled the governor’s actions to suspend laws are consistent with the powers the Legislature granted him.

“Current members of the General Assembly may regret that decision, but they cannot use an unconstitutional means to give that regret legal effect,” Justice Wecht wrote, adding, “the powers delegated to the Governor are admittedly far-reaching, but nonetheless are specific.”

For holiday weekend, Pittsburgh police will focus on ensuring mask wearing, social distancing

Despite Governor Tom Wolf’s expanded mask-wearing order, a spokeswoman for Pittsburgh Public Safety said Thursday the department will not fine people for not wearing masks outside and will remain focused on education and counsel.

Wow. So much here to deplore.

He posted his regrets over attending a party in California. The next day, he died of coronavirus

Thomas Macias, 51, went to a barbecue last month near his community in Lake Elsinore, about 70 miles from Los Angeles.

Shortly after the party, he started feeling sick.

On June 20, he posted a poignant message on Facebook to warn his loved ones about the risks of the virus, his family said.

"I went out a couple of weeks ago ... because of my stupidity I put my mom and sisters and my family's health in jeopardy," he wrote.

"This has been a very painful experience. This is no joke. If you have to go out, wear a mask, and practice social distancing. ... Hopefully with God's help, I'll be able to survive this."

He never made it. He died a day after that post.

Macias worked as a truck driver and suffered from diabetes, making him especially vulnerable to the virus.

Doctors have said people with underlying conditions such as diabetes, chronic lung disease and asthma are at a higher risk.

. . . .

A friend who was at the party reached out to Macias to say he had coronavirus, and he was aware of the diagnosis when he attended the gathering but didn't think he could infect anyone because he had no symptoms, Lopez said.

. . . .

About a dozen people who attended the party tested positive, Lopez said.

Macias got tested on June 15, got his positive result June 18 and died June 21.

The Riverside County Office of Vital Records confirmed that he died of coronavirus.

Rise of mask fanatics

All docs agree the mask protects others and needn't be worn out of doors if everyone is at least 6 feet away and you are not infected or having questionable symptoms.

So a lone walker or a lone reader that healthy in a park or a parking lot with nobody in sight for at least 30 feet needn't mask.

But some medical authoritarians are now demanding a national mask mandate requiring universal masking out of doors, regardless, to be enforced by police.

They know it is overkill.

It's about imposing social discipline and deference to medical authority.

Yet another proof of the folly of allowing a constitution to be changed by a single, simple majority plebiscite

David Campbell stupidly blew the UK out of the EU with such a plebiscite.

This is just way too foolishly democratic.

I am terrified at the thought of what American voters might do with such power, and you should be, too.

Russian voters overwhelmingly back a ploy by President Vladimir Putin to rule until 2036

He has already been in power for about twenty years.

De Blasio trolls the Great Fat Orange Klansman to devastating effect

New York City plans to paint a large Black Lives Matter sign directly in front of Trump Tower in Manhattan.

President Donald Trump blasted New York City's plan to paint the phrase "Black Lives Matter" on Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower, calling it a "symbol of hate" and demanding the city spend the money on policing instead.

NYC officials said last week they would emulate other cities and paint the message in large letters on a prominent roadway -- in this case, right in front of the president's flagship building.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said on MSNBC Wednesday morning that the work would happen in the coming days, leading to Trump's tweets.

Is Joe Scarborough to the (racial) left of Joe Biden on the question of public honors?

It seems now to be the standard thing among black talkers on CNN and MSNBC to insist on Jefferson, Washington, Columbus, and even Lincoln getting tossed into the same boat as Confederate leaders.

Including on Morning Joe and, as it seemed to me, uncontradicted by anyone.

Why are mobs of demonstrators still running around and tearing things down this long after the Floyd killing, and this deep into the worsening pandemic?

Because the Democratic media, on the whole to the left of the Democratic Party, keep cheering for them?

Meanwhile, is Fox fully or only partly on board, today, for masking?

On something called Outnumbered the female host and a female guest both firmly endorsed masks, one quoting the Goldman Sacks study as proof we need a federal mask mandate.

Yup. Fox.
