The Electors choose the president, not the voters, and not the states

Interesting to see Steve M. agrees with me on this point.

Each Elector is constitutionally free to vote for any constitutionally qualified persons for the offices of President and Vice President.

But the country would refuse to believe that or accept it if Republican Electors voted for Pence rather than Trump, a scenario envisioned by Steve M..

As would Donald Trump, regardless of his bragging that he would only appoint people to the Supreme Court who will adhere always to the Constitution.

In fact, democratic legitimacy so far outranks constitutional validity in America today that the entire classe politique would reject the independence of the Electors, and the Supreme Court would certainly intervene with lies to disallow it.

And that is why the way to keep demagogues out of the White House is for the parties to rely less on voters and more on the choice of party professionals in their selection of nominees.

It is politically impossible for the Electors to save us from ourselves by simply ignoring the result of a lengthy democratic process of selection.

If we are to be saved from democracy, it has to happen much earlier, during the process by which the parties select the nominees.

As I have written before this.

P.S.

Mike Pence would be a nightmare in the White House, though for reasons different from those for which The Donald would be a nightmare.
