Food Stamp Beneficiaries Exceed 46,000,000 for 38 Straight Months
Drudge links to this CNS story that's apparently supposed to stoke the ire of the right at these millions of moochers.
It comes to about 20 percent of American households.
It is not a surprise, though it is an unhappy fact, that so many Americans need this help.
It is a good thing they are getting it.
Capitalism requires permanent government interventions like this Great Society program, part of our inheritance from progressivism that the right wants to get rid of.
The right reacts with anger.
"47 Percent" Remark: Quote of the Year
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what...who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims. ...These are people who pay no income tax. ...and so my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
—Mitt Romney, remarks at private fundraiser, Boca Raton, Fla., May 17
Right up there with the infamous shout, "Let them die!" called out from the audience when someone asked the candidates at a Republican debate what should be done with the uninsured sick.
Primary season of 2008, I think it was.
And that shout was much better than "Let them eat cake!"
