Allegheny County bars, restaurants ordered closed as new COVID-19 cases double
Allegheny County on Thursday took another step to mitigate a resurgent spike of COVID-19 cases by ordering a one-week closure of bars, restaurants and casinos and putting a halt to events that included more than 25 people.
The latest health department order was made as the county saw its number of positive cases double from the previous day, hitting a new record in the process.
The county reported 233 new cases, more than double the increase of 110 new cases reported on Wednesday.
Moreover, the state Department of Health said the percentage of people testing positive has been ticking up in Allegheny County, nearly doubling to 5.1% for the week ending June 28, compared to 2.6% the previous week.
Since Allegheny County reported its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on March 14, it has had a total of 3,103 cases.
Thursday marked the first time that cases eclipsed the 200 mark and is the third consecutive day of triple-digit increases in new cases.
