Allegheny County accounts for 180 additional cases
Pennsylvania health officials on Friday reported 1,009 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 93,876.
The last time the state saw an increase of over 1,000 new cases in a single day was May 10, when the majority of the state was still in the red phase.
We have lost everything we gained during the period of more aggressive lockdown.
UPMC says recent strain of COVID-19 may not be as virulent
UPMC more recently has been seeing a mutated SARS-CoV-2 strain that seems to be more infectious but less virulent than the original strain that triggered the pandemic, said Dr. Graham Snyder, UPMC medical director of infection prevention and hospital epidemiology.
Only 2% of recent infections are causing severe enough illness to result in hospitalizations, with only one-tenth of those hospitalizations (or 0.2% of all positive cases) resulting in death.
