Trump, of course, is the poster boy for what can go wrong with a too democratic selection process.

And the unwillingness of people to accept the undemocratic power and role of conventions in selecting the parties' own candidates is only a hint at the fury of the mob in case the Electoral College ever tried to save the country from the voters by mass faithlessness, though the choice of our president is constitutionally entirely theirs.
