The Director of the CIA has come out against torture and publicly insisted that if ordered to do it the CIA and its agents will not obey.
Trump denounced those comments and insisted we are losing the battle against ISIS because we are not being tough enough.
He insists we can't win unless we are as savage and barbaric as the Jihaders.
His claims are nonsense.
There is no place for torture in law enforcement or in the treatment of prisoners of war.
The task of the former is to apprehend and punish those who have already broken the law.
The task of the latter is to defeat enemy forces.
The case is otherwise when there is a prospect of Jihader procurement and use of weapons of mass destruction.
There, the task is preventive.
And there the threat is so great that use of torture to gain information, if it would be helpful, is surely warranted.
