The stretch of trail on the Southside from 18th Street (Riverside Park) to the Hot Metal Bridge (Southside Park) is just gorgeous.
Very well maintained and very friendly to both bicycles and pedestrians, the views across the river are spectacular and there are numerous historical markers and benches.
At several points, people unconcerned with skin cancer were sunning themselves on benches or stairways.
(After carving out a dangerous but not cancerous mole and about an inch on either side, my dermatologist told me firmly and repeatedly, no sun. Just flat out no sun. I am one of those who tan a bit only after a cycle or two of burn and peel.)
Too, that stretch runs right behind the Hofbrau Haus, and there is a fine outdoor area with its own bar (they serve food, too) and its own view.
And there are steps and bike paths down to the Fox Chapel Yacht Club's Monongahela outpost at the beautiful Southside Marina (Its own is on the North shore of the Allegheny.)
The grade along that stretch is a bit steep for my taste, but the trail was very busy on this beautiful summer day.
About half the cyclists wore helmets, maybe two thirds were women, and maybe 20 % were geezers.
