His bank and many ventures rest, it seems, on forgery and fraud.

Highly expressive.

Business failures everywhere.

In the same chapter Arthur Clennam enters the Marshalsea as a prisoner for debt, having invested everything on the urging of Pancks in Merdle enterprises.
