Pittsburgh under curfew after police vehicles set ablaze during protests; 44 arrested
A planned demonstration against police brutality following the death of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis who died in police custody, took a bad turn Saturday, about two hours into the march.
By late evening, at least a dozen buildings in Downtown Pittsburgh were damaged or looted, police said.
Two Pittsburgh police cruisers were also set afire.
The total amount of damage was unknown.
Four Pittsburgh police officers were hospitalized and later released and several others were injured, but did not require hospitalization.
Several people in the crowd were injured, including at least three journalists who were attacked by protesters.
None of the injuries were serious, according to police.
The police used gas against protesters during the demonstration.

A huge crowd outside the WH in DC right now
Crowd seems as white as black, pretty young, very crowded, lots of masks.
None for me, thanks
Allegheny, most southwest counties moving to green phase of reopening June 5
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said people, under the green phase, must continue to wear masks, maintain social distancing and take precautions to prevent a resurgence of COVID-19 as the county transitions.
“This is a good thing for us to be able to do with businesses allowed to open — hair salons, restaurants, nail salons and gyms with all the hardworking people who have been disadvantaged over the last couple of months,” he said,
Restaurants, however, will be limited to 50% of their normal capacity while appointments will be necessary for patrons of salons and gyms to prevent gatherings in waiting rooms or locker rooms.
Events, meanwhile, will be restricted to no more than 250 people.
But Mr. Fitzgerald said that indoor events will pose a higher risk of spreading the virus than outdoor events.
A decision will be made next week about reopening the four county swimming pools, given concerns about locker rooms, concession stands and close contact of people in the pools themselves.
Restaurants and bars in Allegheny and most surrounding counties can open at half capacity Friday

Masses of whites all over the country come out for Floyd and racial justice
Way, way more white participation than you'd expect.
I say it's a hell of a lot of bored young whites really sick of staying home and avoiding crowds.
Sick of not being part of a crowd at a ball game, a marathon, a river regatta, a downtown art festival, a May Day parade, and so on and so on.
All the outdoor fun we've been denied, so far, this season.

Biden reacts to the Floyd killing and the violence
Amy Klobuchar has fallen from her high place on the list of possible Democratic VP nominees.
Biden spoke to a camera someplace today and said several black women were on the list.
If he dies, falls ill, or resigns in his first term we could have our first woman president, and a black woman, at that.
Assuming these riots don't win Trump's election for him.
They might very well do that.
Biden and the Democrats have to follow the MN governor and mayor, Bill Deblasio, Amy Klobuchar, and other Democratic politicians forced to deal with this and thread the needle, condemning the killing of Floyd, denouncing racism, denouncing police misconduct against black Americans, but at the same time giving no ground at all to violence and destruction.
Edge too far one way and white voters desert to the GOP that will in any case attack Democratic weakness and radicalism and smear the party with the "riot ideology" we heard of a few years ago.
Edge too far the other way and black turnout collapses.
Al Sharpton is in Staten Island preaching to peaceful demonstrators.
The cop who killed Floyd is in custody, but not his accomplices.

Violence and destruction all over the US
No more peaceful protests.
Arson, murder, and destruction in many cities by crowds and individuals not much worried about the virus.
80% of the rioters allegedly are not even from the cities they are attacking, per MSNBC: Minneapolis, St Paul, NYC, Detroit, and others.
[Just saw a clip of the governor making that claim to the cameras in MN on MSNBC. A former official of the NAACP expressed incredulity in the firmest terms.]
[A video is being shown of a cop marching up to a girl demonstrator who was just standing in the street and hit her brutally on the head with a nightstick. A police supervisor in a white shirt was on the spot, did not intervene, and did not appear to react or disapprove.]
Politicians and law enforcement are clear they don't regard any of this as legitimate or excused or justified by the Floyd case.
De Blasio in NYC, for example.
The governor of MN has ordered full mobilization of the NGs, and claims the violence is being organized on the dark web and, if I understood correctly, that there is incitement on the web by foreign actors.
Trump, no doubt rattled by protests and disorder last night around the White House, has ordered the US military to organize army MPs to seize control of Minneapolis.
He was not asked for assistance by any official in MN.
Apparently there is some reason to expect mobs of his supporters to come to DC to counter-demonstrate against the DC demonstrators protesting the murder of Floyd and police misconduct in general.
So says MSNBC.
Trump is known to support police brutality and criminal police conduct toward civilians.
Right now we are watching live video of demonstrators in Wilmington DE repeatedly attacking police cars and doing their best to provoke police violence, especially one particular young woman who repeatedly approached and hammered and threw unknown fluids on one car, and I am amazed she did not succeed in provoking the police inside.
Police and others talking about what we are seeing are using the words "provocateurs" and "anarchists".
Trump is on the TV now calling the Democratic mayor of Minneapolis a radical leftist and denouncing as "stupid" the police withdrawal from that precinct house that got torched the other night in that city.
And he is urging the Democratic governor of MN and mayor that he is ready to send in federal troops to enforce order whenever they ask.
Trump is labeling the rioters "leftists" and "radical leftists". He and the GOP will make this a campaign issue and event. If they have any sense they'll let Democratic governors and mayors handle the mess and later heap blame upon them.
The MN governor just now made a good and angry speech about those doing so much destruction.
The Lt Gov, Peggy Flanagan, apparently one of those mostly white people who claim to be Indians because, well, mestizos in the US are almost all that's left of the Indians, is speaking against the destruction.
She looks about as Indian as Elizabeth Warren, whose claim to be an Indian appears rather in a different light, bearing this in mind.
Amy Klobuchar in on the stage now doing the same.

If you add up all the activists in all the causes in the US today, why would so many be such f-ing idiots in such stupid causes?

Trump announces unprecedented action against China
President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on China Friday, naming misdeeds that range from espionage to the violation of Hong Kong's freedoms, and announced a slew of retaliatory measures that will plunge US-China relations deeper into crisis.
"They've ripped off the United States like no one has ever done before," Trump said of China, as he decried the way Beijing has "raided our factories" and "gutted" American industry, casting Beijing as a central foil he will run against in the remaining months of his re-election campaign.
Trump appeared in the Rose Garden at the end of a week when the US hit 100,000 deaths in the coronavirus pandemic and as massive protests roiled Minneapolis after the death in police custody an African American man, but mentioned neither, focusing instead on casting Beijing as an existential geopolitical threat.
Trump called out China for "espionage to steal our industrial secrets, of which there are many," announced steps to protect American investors from Chinese financial practices, accused Beijing of "unlawfully claiming territory in the Pacific Ocean" and threatening freedom of navigation.
The President also blasted Beijing for passing a national security law that fundamentally undermines Hong Kong's autonomy, announcing that going forward, the US will treat Hong Kong the way it treats the rest of China.
Trump said the US will strip Hong Kong of the special policy measures on extradition, trade, travel and customs Washington had previously granted it.
Trump announced the US would pull out of the World Health Organization even as the global coronavirus pandemic continues to claim lives, claiming that China has "total control" over the WHO, an organization of 194 member states.

Illimois Governor Pritzker Calls President Trump a ‘Racist, Misogynist Homophobe’
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker harshly condemned President Trump's response to the protests following the controversial death of George Floyd in Minneapolis by calling the president a "racist, misognyist, homophobe."
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Friday ripped President Donald Trump, saying he’s fomenting violence and playing to racist urges for political gain in response to the killing of a black man by a Minneapolis police officer and subsequent rioting.
Lightfoot’s comments were an apparent response to Trump tweeting a message that included “When the looting starts, the shooting starts” in response to rioting in Minneapolis and elsewhere following the death of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck while he was in custody.
Lightfoot said the president cannot be allowed to divide and destabilize the country.
MN Gov and AG disagree with local prosecutor, call for "swift justice"
I watched on MSNBC.
Everyone involved is taking it for granted that this was about racism.
And not just plain, ugly, murderous cop thuggery.
Not to say it couldn't be both, but cops kill and beat the powerless of all races with the same impunity and anybody, say, above 60 likely knows of at least one case in which police killed or beat or tortured somebody they personally know.
I know of white victims killed by police.
One was an young white male worker whose supervisor was my wife, back in the day.
Cop heads just don't roll when it's little people, of whatever race.

Trump signs executive order to narrow protections for social media platforms
He's such an idiot.
He doesn't get to override laws by executive order, though I'm sure both he and his fascist-without-knowing-it (or maybe they do know it) supporters wish it were so and don't know or care that it's not.
It's the protection of that legal provision that allows these media to let his and his allies' and Russian and Chinese and anybody's lies run riot online, all the while washing their hands and refusing responsibility.
Take away that protection and they are faced with legal liability for everything posted on their platforms, just as newspapers and electronic news media are responsible for the work of their employees.
The move was welcomed by observers who argue that Facebook and Twitter should be held responsible for their content and subject to the same laws as the New York Times and other mainstream outlets.
But many in the business and technology sectors argue the order could curb freedom of speech on the internet and it conflicts with existing law – which only Congress, not the president - can change.
Matt Schruers, the president of the Computer and Communications Industry Association, told the Associated Press:
“The irony that is lost here is that if these protections were to go away social media services would be far more aggressive in moderating content and terminating accounts."
Trump. Too stupid to live.

Really excellent video
The Abolitionists, a PBS American Experience series.
And very, very far from allowing any sort of moral equivalence to obtain between these folks and the slave owners and their broader alliance, the opponents of the abolitionists all over the country, including the mobs of the North.
Who, watching this, does not see that struggle as continuous with the struggles not only of the Civil War, but also of Reconstruction, and of the Civil Rights Era?
Or the struggle even today?
Oh, and last night there was the chilling Hitler on Trial, also on amazon video.
Also, in its way, the same struggle.
For liberté, égalité, and fraternité.

Wisconsin reports record number of new coronavirus cases, deaths
Wisconsin saw a record number of new coronavirus cases and deaths reported in a single day on Wednesday, two weeks after the state’s Supreme Court struck down its statewide stay-at-home order.
The state reported 599 new known COVID-19 cases on Wednesday with 22 known deaths, according to Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services, the highest recorded daily rise since the pandemic began there.
As of Wednesday, the state had more than 16,460 known cases and 539 known deaths, according to the department.
Wisconsin State Fair canceled for the first time in 75 years
The Wisconsin State Fair has been canceled for the first time in 75 years.
Organizers said Thursday they were concerned about operating a massive event safely and economically during the coronavirus pandemic.
Wisconsin moves to send absentee ballot applications to most voters
The Wisconsin Elections Commission is taking the first step toward sending absentee ballot applications to most registered voters in the crucial general election battleground state amid concerns about in-person voting during the coronavirus pandemic.
The members of the bipartisan commission voted 6-0 on Wednesday to advance the plan to send applications to roughly 2.7 million of the state’s nearly 3.4 million registered voters.
The unanimous vote came a week after the panel failed to reach agreement on who should receive the ballot applications.
The forms would be sent to all voters except those who already have requested an absentee ballot or have moved and haven't confirmed their address -- or roughly 2.7 million voters.
Voters would be able to use the forms to request an absentee ballot for November’s general election.
By filling out the form and providing a copy of a photo ID, a voter would receive an absentee ballot for the Nov. 3 election.

So are medical professionals joining the heretofore Republican culture of death?
Or maybe it's just the MSM mainstreaming it, eh?
Dr Ezekiel Emmanuel urges on MSNBC to a sympathetic Andrea Mitchel that kids go to camp though, as he avoids saying outright, this means kids and family members will die.
What he says outright is that kids will get sick and kids will bring the bug home and make their families sick.
He uses for sending kids to camp several talking points the GOP uses for urging we return to work.
People face risks, anyway, people die anyway, and if we don't go to work various bad things happen and various good things, to be got from work, are missed out on.
Imagine that.

A day for numbers
In the US, today, per MSNBC, we have over 101,000 dead of the virus, over 1.7 million confirmed cases so far, and over 40 million unemployed.
On the other hand, also per MSNBC, we have new studies indicating that persons who remain asymptomatic account for from 40 % to 80 % of the actual total infected.
Since anybody infected can spread the disease, the greater the number of pre or asymptomatic people who are spreading the disease the more urgent the need for efficacious measures of caution among people who seem healthy.
It is widely supposed that while all confirmed cases are or were symptomatic, not all current and past symptomatic cases in the US are or were also confirmed.
Some unknown number of people got sick (became symptomatic) and then got better without ever being tested, for example.
So the total of symptomatic cases > the cases so far confirmed.
The asymptomatic cases are indicated to be between 40 % and 80 % of the total of actual cases.
So the symptomatic cases are between 60% and 20 % of the actual cases.
So the actual cases are between 10/6 and 10/2 of the symptomatic cases.
But, since the symptomatic cases > confirmed cases, 10/6 and 10/2 of symptomatic cases > 10/6 and 10/2 of confirmed cases.
Now 10/6 and 10/2 of 1.7 M confirmed cases are respectively 2.833333 M and 8.5 M
So the number actually infected in the US so far is between some number > 2,833,333 and some number > 8,500,000.
How's that for mud in your eye?
Anyway, this would indicate fatality estimates based on confirmed deaths and confirmed cases are much too high, and the bug is a lot less lethal than we now fear, for the population as a whole.
And that would be the upside of the downside.

Sanjay Gupta discredits himself and the CDC
On MSNBC a while ago (I was just getting out of bed), Dr. Sanjay Gupta urged that mask wearing in public be required by law in all states
He was visibly angry at people refusing to social distance and refusing to wear masks in public.
He cited studies that credit widespread mask wearing with preventing a high percentage of new infections, insisting they make a real difference and save lives.
But then he blew it all when, all on his own, he denounced the CDC for telling everybody to skip the extra washing of surfaces and equipment because the virus isn't spread that way and all that washing does no good.
He was angry at the CDC and said telling people to skip all that extra work and expense because it was unnecessary sent entirely the wrong message.
He said the CDC should have said nothing about its futility and continued to tell people it was needed because them saying that and people actually doing all that washing gets people to take the virus seriously.
Virus deniers have been claiming all along that the CDC is lying to us all about the gravity of this bug.
The deniers accuse the CDC of inflating the numbers of expected new infections and fatalities, actual infections and fatalities, the severity of the disease, and the useful impact of measures designed to delay or limit infections such as disinfecting and washing workplaces, wearing masks, social distancing, and keeping people home.
Sanjay Gupta publicly calling for the CDC to lie about disinfecting and washing workplaces lends credibility to the deniers' claims and erodes the credibility of himself, of public health professionals, and even of the CDC.
Update.
GOP lawmaker rages.
“All these precautions, all the masks, all the spacing at the desks, all of these plexiglass partitions for perception so we can all feel safe. But we all really know it really doesn’t help. Who are you kidding? Honestly, who are you kidding?”
It's certainly false that we all know that since if we all know it then we all believe it, and we don't.
And I'm pretty sure she doesn't know it, either, since if you know that p then it's true that p, and it's certainly not true none of that stuff helps at all.
Heck, I'm pretty sure she doesn't even believe it.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure she's just lying.
But it's to this kind of lie that Sanjay is lending credibility.

Seems like an encounter of two really nasty people
Of the two, he was worse.
He actually went to the park planning on such an encounter.
Did anybody test those dog-treats for poison or ground glass?
White woman who called police on a black man bird-watching in Central Park has been fired

Did anybody test those dog-treats for poison or ground glass?
White woman who called police on a black man bird-watching in Central Park has been fired
She's wrong to let the dog run loose in that part of the park.
He's wrong to so officiously interfere.
She's wrong to refuse to comply with his admittedly pain-in-ass demand.
He's wrong to menace the dog.
She's wrong to freak out and react by calling police and lying that he was threatening her life.
And then he wins, gloating, putting up his video on the web to nail her.
He's really happy with his results, too.
She's been fired and he's the star in his own saga of racism avenged by a magnanimous and forgiving black man.

Trump threatens to close down social media platforms which ‘silence conservative voices’ after Twitter posts warning under his tweet
Twitter did the least they could do about his nauseating lie and do anything at all.
And they still got blessed with the rage of the blowhard who can never stop pretending to have powers he doesn't have.
They should have just deleted his tweets.
Or at least labeled them lies.
When our mini-Mussolini does that - threatens to exercise powers he does not have - and gets freak-out headlines does he just laugh and laugh at us all in private?
Oh, and if I were a conservative I'd resent the smear implied when he disguises defense of his own ability to pour out lying shit all over the hive-mind of the conservative movement as a defense of access for conservatives and conservatism.
Um, on second thought, I guess I wouldn't.

Minneapolis cop kills a man on video
George Floyd, suspected of passing a counterfeit twenty, was taken into custody.
Police say he briefly resisted arrest.
The unidentified cop held him down, handcuffed, kneeling on his neck for from five to eight minutes, apparently until he died.
Three other cops shooed away bystanders, preventing interference.
Claire McCaskill chose to use the first of her fifteen or twenty seconds of comment on Morning Joe to insist that most police are good people.
Cringe.

What's happening to this planet?
The idea of stable ecosystems is childish twaddle, and always has been.
Evolution never stops, not of species, and not of whole ecosystems.
But this does seem pretty quick.
Insect mass extinctions?
Almost 10:30 pm EDT and no outside noises at all.
Not the crickets of fall.
Not the frogs and louder bugs of hot summer.
I still haven't seen a honey bee. And damned few bumble bees. And only one hornet. Or wasp, whichever.
It's almost June.
I haven't seen a single firefly, but they usually show up in numbers in July.
Where are the Mayflies?
Come to that, where are any flies?
We've got ants - carpenter ants - in what appear usual numbers/
No grasshoppers?

Charlotte City councilman says it wouldn't be responsible to have an arena full of people for RNC
Charlotte City Councilman Larken Egleston on Tuesday said it would not be responsible to host the 2020 Republican National Convention in the city as planned, adding President Donald Trump should accept it's going to look different.
His comments came a day after Trump threatened to pull the convention out of the city where it is scheduled to be held in late August.
In a series of tweets, Trump lambasted North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and contended that the Democrat is "unable to guarantee" that the arena can be filled to capacity.
The President also demanded Republicans "immediately be given" an answer from Cooper on the convention's future in the city.
"There's no way for the governor at this point to say he could have an arena full of people or that Charlotte could have 50,000 people coming into town for any event. And frankly, I think the only thing you can say definitively is that wouldn't be responsible three months from now," Egleston, a Democrat, told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day."
"So, if we're going to host this convention, it's going to have to look very different than we thought it was going to, and the President should acknowledge that."

Increasingly, docs are pointing out there may ultimately be no vaccine.
And even if there is one it might not be available for years, or be very helpful, and it might be less helpful for the elderly - the most vulnerable - than for everybody else.
So many people in denial. Or just saying "Fuck it," it seems.
That mask the barber is wearing can't save you if the barber has the bug and is all over you for the twenty minutes it takes to cut your hair.
Nobody should go to a barber shop unless everyone working there has tested negative at the beginning of that same day and is wearing a mask, per Dr. Irwin Redlener right now on MSNBC, who says he would halt all reopenings until necessary testing is made feasible.
And yet nobody is doing or can do that now.
Redlener characterized the ongoing reopening of America as too fast, too chaotic, and a great mistake that will certainly cost many unnecessarily lost lives.
Second stylist at same Missouri hair salon tests positive, nearly 140 exposed to coronavirus
140 clients at a hair salon in Missouri have now potentially been exposed to COVID-19 after a second hairstylist at the location tested positive for the coronavirus.
On Friday, the city of Springfield said 91 people had been exposed to the coronavirus after a stylist worked for eight days while showing symptoms. Among the 91 were 84 clients and seven employees.
Now, 56 more clients have been “potentially directly exposed,” the city said Saturday, explaining that the second stylist at the Great Clips salon tested positive and worked five days while “experiencing very mild symptoms.”
“At this time, this is the only other positive result we have had from those tested as a result of the previous exposure,” the city said.
Both the stylists and their clients were wearing face coverings, and the health department said it was reaching out to all those possibly exposed.
Hair salons are allowed to operate in Missouri under their reopening guidelines, and the city previously said those possibly exposed at the salon would be offered tests.

Consider this national cluster-fuck and then ask yourself how it would all go if the next crazy virus were as contagious as this one but as deadly as Ebola.
Ebola kills half those it infects.

Trump threatens to pull Republican convention out of North Carolina
He is still pretending the virus is a big nothing.
But now he is insisting others join him in his folly and return to pre-pandemic patterns of behavior.
Not the new normal but the old normal, is what he wants.
President Donald Trump began a solemn Memorial Day railing against North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, ahead of the 2020 Republican National Convention, threatening to pull it out of Charlotte, where the convention is expected to be held August 24 to 27.
Trump contended that Cooper is "unable to guarantee" that the arena can be filled to capacity.
"I love the Great State of North Carolina, so much so that I insisted on having the Republican National Convention in Charlotte at the end of August," Trump said in a series of tweets.
"Unfortunately, Democrat Governor, @RoyCooperNC is still in Shutdown mood & unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed full attendance in the Arena.
"In other words, we would be spending millions of dollars building the Arena to a very high standard without even knowing if the Democrat Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space."

All Pa. counties will be in ‘yellow’ by June 5, some going green next week
Pennsylvania counties still under strict coronavirus restrictions — including hard-hit Philadelphia, its suburbs, and the Lehigh Valley — will move to the “yellow” reopening phase on June 5, Gov. Tom Wolf announced Friday while also moving some north-central and northwest counties to the green phase next week.
“My stay-at-home order did exactly what it was intended to do: It saved lives,” Mr. Wolf said during a news conference, as he touted the state’s progress containing COVID-19.
“Over the past two weeks, we have seen sustained reductions in hospitalizations. ... Our new case rate has been shrinking.”
By June 5, Mr. Wolf said all counties will at least be in the yellow phase of his tiered reopening plan.
The last to go will be Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Northampton, Montgomery, and Philadelphia — counties that have yet to meet a case-decline standard Mr. Wolf’s administration established to determine when areas can safely begin loosening lockdown orders.

People who need to work can be expected to work even when sick.
From the beginning it was in the cards this would happen.

Not on your life.

Trump, ever the asshole
Trump held a presser to pressure governors to allow worship in churches and was more of a partisan asshole about it than anyone would have had to be.
Trump orders all places of worship to open, declaring them essential
And he has exactly the same authority to do those things as a parking lot attendant.
President Trump announced Friday that all houses of worship would be considered “essential services” and urged governors to “do the right thing” and reopen them immediately — adding that he would “override” them if they didn’t.
“Today, I am identifying houses of worship, churches, synagogues, and mosques, as essential places that provide essential services,” Trump said in a sudden White House briefing.
“Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics is essential, but have left out churches and other houses of worship, it’s not right. So I am correcting this injustice and calling houses of worship essential. I call upon governors to allow churches and places of worship to open right now,” the president said, adding that he’d overrule governors who don’t comply.

CDC estimate: 35% of cases are asymptomatic
About a third of coronavirus cases are asymptomatic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in guidance for mathematical modelers and public health officials.
The "current best estimate" for the percent of positive cases that are asymptomatic is 35%, but the CDC says that number could change as more data becomes available.
The CDC says the new coronavirus can be transmitted by people who have not yet experienced symptoms or who never experience symptoms.
It appears CDC distinguishes between "presymptomatic" and "asymptomatic".
The former refers to infected people who will eventually have symptoms but don't yet.
The latter refers to infected people who never develop symptoms.
A pre-symptomatic case of COVID-19 is an individual infected with SARS-CoV-2 who has not exhibited symptoms at the time of testing, but who later exhibits symptoms during the course of the infection.
An asymptomatic case is an individual infected with SARS-CoV-2 who does not exhibit symptoms during the course of infection.

Who was that masked man?
I checked several medical sites and they all urge the use of masks, insisting they inhibit the spread of the bug from those who have it to those who don't.
The mask is to protect others, and does help.
But MSNBC has several times had a doctor on who insists masks are useless.
If you stand next to a person who has the bug for one minute you will be infected, masks or no.
Leaves you wondering, eh?
Anyway, I won't be getting a haircut any time soon.
Don't share a car, don't ride a bus, don't get on a plane, etc..

Trump says US topping world virus cases is 'badge of honour'
On Monday, Mr Trump was hosting his first cabinet meeting since the US outbreak began.
"By the way," he told reporters, "you know when you say that we lead in cases, that's because we have more testing than anybody else."
"So when we have a lot of cases," he continued, "I don't look at that as a bad thing, I look at that as, in a certain respect, as being a good thing because it means our testing is much better."
He added: "So I view it as a badge of honour. Really, it's a badge of honour.
"It's a great tribute to the testing and all of the work that a lot of professionals have done."
Or he knows the difference perfectly well but his prospective supporters don't, dumbasses that they are.

I went to high school in the mid 1960s and I don't recall being taught about Wilson's policy of squashing all news about the Spanish Flu in the US, making him partially responsible for the avalanche of American deaths.

Braun said he last night went to two different restaurants [was he really hungry?] to eat.
The guy is begging the bug to bite.
Did Scarborough miss this?
He says Trump is lying and isn't really taking the drug.

WH doctor: 'Potential benefit' of Trump taking hydroxychloroquine 'outweighed' risks
President Trump's physician on Monday confirmed that the president is now taking the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine despite not having the coronavirus, saying he and Trump concluded "the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks."
In a 114-word letter released by the White House hours after Trump announced he was taking the medication, presidential physician Sean Conley wrote that he discussed the pros and cons of taking the drug with Trump after one of his personal valets tested positive for the coronavirus.

Hydroxychloroquine, Trump and Covid-19: what you need to know
His fixation on his quack remedy endures.
He's a well known liar and fool.
Joe Scarborough says it's baloney and Trump's doc wouldn't give him a prescription.
Gupta flipped out and expressed in outrage the hope it's not true.
Fox News has a doc with a different take.

But this is an admission the president and his supporters are way jumping the gun.
Siegel [on Tucker Carlson's show] said he was looking at the issue "medically" not politically.
"Does it work in humans? We've seen some studies from Italy, from France and from China that show it might work early in the course of it [coronavirus]," Siegel said.
"And there's a big study in Spain right now and a huge study from the NIH looking at this. Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit has given it to three thousand health care workers, Tucker, to see if it prevents them from getting COVID-19."
Pelosi says 'morbidly obese' Trump taking hydroxychloroquine 'not a good idea'
"I would rather he not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists, especially in his age group and in his, shall we say, weight group, morbidly obese, they say," Pelosi said during an appearance on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."
"So, I think that it's not a good idea," she said.

Trump has repeatedly touted the drug as a potential coronavirus cure or preventative measure over the past two months, despite the lack of evidence that it's effective against the disease.
"Here’s my evidence: I get a lot of positive calls about it," Trump said on Monday. "So far, I seem to be OK."
Neil Cavuto reacts to Trump taking hydroxychloroquine: 'A leap that should not be taken casually'
Cavuto, shocked by the president's comments, went through numerous studies involving the drug and their results, including a study of VA patients that the president himself brought up.
"The VA study, to which the president alluded, wasn't a loaded political one. It was a test on patients there and those who took it in a vulnerable population, including those with respiratory or other conditions. They died," Cavuto said.
"I want to stress again. They died."
The nationwide study in veterans hospitals, which was released last month, was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it was the largest look so far at the effects of hydroxychloroquine taken with or without the antibiotic azithromycin for COVID-19.
"If you are in a risky population here and you are taking this as a preventative treatment to ward off the virus, or in a worst case scenario, you are dealing with the virus and you are in this vulnerable population it will kill you," Cavuto warned.
"I cannot stress enough. This will kill you."

The tax cut vs virus relief
That budget busting deficit killing GOP tax cut for the rich was projected to cost the government $ 1 T in revenues over ten years.
Democratic media howled and whined about how damaging that was to the economy, the government, to crucial government activities and programs, etc.
So far, if I have not misunderstood, virus relief will cost $ 3 T this year and the current bill before congress - endorsed by Democrats and opposed by Republicans - would cost another $ 3 T.

Brazil announced nearly 15,000 new infections on Saturday, taking its total to more than 230,000, the fourth-largest confirmed caseload after the US, Russia and the UK.
Its true number of infections is feared to be much greater, given that the country had carried out fewer than a 500,000 tests by the start of last week, compared with about 1.9m in Spain and Italy.
1.487 M cases in the US, with 90 K deaths.
4.744 M cases worldwide, with 316 K deaths.
Was the virus out there as early as November? Is there a deeper Chinese coverup?
New evidence in race to find France's COVID-19 'patient zero'
French doctors may have made a breakthrough in the race to establish where and when the coronavirus pandemic first hit Europe, by establishing that the virus may have been in France much earlier than anyone thought.
A team of researchers in the city of Colmar in northeastern France announced in a release last week that it had identified two X-rays, from Nov. 16 and Nov. 18, showing symptoms consistent with the novel coronavirus.
. . . .
Officials in the Chinese city of Wuhan confirmed the existence of a then-unknown illness with pneumonia-like symptoms to the World Health Organization’s China office on Dec. 31, but it wasn’t established as a new coronavirus until Jan. 7.
U.S. spy agencies have gathered intelligence hinting at a public health crisis in Wuhan in November.

A necessary Gedankenexperiment
Look at how things have gone, at all the US infected and killed in comparison with the rest of the world, at an administration in DC that makes things worse instead of better.
And imagine where we would be if the virus had been as infectious as it is but as deadly as Ebola.
Something like that could be coming.

Well, OK. Given the circumstances. But it's right on the edge.
Detroit priest sprays holy water from squirt gun to maintain social distancing
A Roman Catholic priest in the Detroit area has taken aim at his parishioners in a bid to maintain social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, using a squirt gun to shoot holy water.
Photos posted on social media by the St Ambrose Church show the Reverend Timothy Pelc shooting water into a car window as it stopped by the steps of the church.
He wore a mask, face shield and rubber gloves as further precautions against spreading the coronavirus.
. . . .
Pelc told BuzzFeed News that he was a little concerned about how the Vatican might react when the photos of him squirting holy water began circulating widely on the internet.
But, he said, “I haven’t heard anything yet.”
The idea was to find a way to continue a tradition of blessing Easter baskets despite the pandemic. One photo shows Pelc standing behind a car with its hatchback door up, shooting water at a basket of flowers.
He said he has a “pretty wacky mind and pretty accepting congregation”

At the Bright Hearing, Republicans Tell Scientists: You May Have Your Fancy Studies, But We Have Anecdotes
Dr. Rick Bright, who has spent his adult life working to make vaccines to prevent terrible diseases and who desperately tried to get the louche, evil frauds in the Trump administration to do something about the goddamn coronavirus that was about to fuck our shit up and then got fired for his efforts, was the star witness at the hearing of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce's health subcommittee today.
And you gotta pity Bright as he faced down the goobers, goons, crackers, and crazies in the Republican Party who either wanted to peddle some batshit ideas about how to treat COVID-19 or prop up the saggy tits of President Trump by discrediting Bright.
The look on Bright's face every time he had to answer GOP questions was one of "Jesus, these delusional fucks are getting people killed."

Honestly, it was like the Republican Party has invested in stock in the company that makes hydroxychloroquine (and, you know, many of its members probably have).
They asked repeatedly about the drug that Trump and the entire right-wing media machine touted as the miracle to end the plague.
Right out of the gate, GOP Rep. Michael Burgess, who represents the Walmarts and malls of the north Dallas suburbs, and is an honest-to-fuck physician, went all in on hydroxychloroquine:
"I’m hearing from a lot of doctors in my state, around the country, who have experience using hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine coupled with as erythromycin and zinc, and they’re reporting significant benefit if it is used early enough in the course and may eliminate the need for hospitalization."
He heard some stories.
I've had people tell me they saw Bigfoot.
They didn't fuckin' see Bigfoot.
They saw something and decided it was Bigfoot because they wanted to fuckin' see Bigfoot.
That's not how medical research works.
Hell, that's not even how genuine Bigfoot research works.
Bright answered, essentially, "Are you fucking serious with this shit?"
If Mika says it it must be so, right?
She reported a rumor or a leak or a source or somebody said Pompeo visited Trump to ask him to get rid of the IG investigating him (Pompeo) and Trump made the call right them.

I had forgotten how good Brando was in that role.

HHS Secretary: Trump's 'Warp Speed' Vaccine 'May Not Be Safe And Effective But We'll Have It'
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar on Sunday admitted that the Trump administration's so-called "Warp Speed" vaccine effort could produce hundreds of millions of doses that are neither safe nor effective.
Azar made the remarks during an appearance on Face the Nation with host Margaret Brennan.
Well, what did you think would happen with a vaccine made of equal amounts of Lysol, Clorox, and UV light?
Trump's personal leadership guarantees this will be a public health disaster, unsafe, useless, and a complete waste of critical resources for months and months.

Yup. Masks off.
Just above 80 and a bit humid, today, though nothing like July or August.
Schenley oval was at its most crowded and the tennis courts were open. Some were in use.
No masks, today, on all those people, except for one elderly lady walking alone.
Odd the tents are still up on the courts along Cedar Blvd, and there is still a sign saying they’re closed and another saying the professional tennis event is cancelled this year.
Those signs have been there for well over a month.
Seems to be darkening up. Might rain.

How to do the job
Cuomo at his daily press briefing on TV just got tested for the virus to show the public how easy, quick, and painless it is.
He says in NY anybody with symptoms or who has been in contact with somebody who tested positive can get a test for free.
He and his medical advisors think lots of people who should get tested are not doing it.
Hence the personal demo.
A doctor in full PPE (it looks like a hazmat suit, only less heavy and more blue) stuck a swab about three or four inches up a nostril as cameras flashed.
And that was it.
He said it was painless and he had no discomfort, but I figure that’s not entirely true.
It looks nasty, and I’ve read if it's not actually painful then at least “there will be some discomfort”.

Obamagate is a successful distraction from Dr. Bright's blown whistle.
So said David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who left the party in 2018, on Joy Reid's show, just now.
Bright blew the whistle on the Duce's waste of resources on mass purchases and tests of his favorite quack remedy, hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that, used for Covid-19 cases, does no good and causes deaths.
And then almost immediately Trump and his epigones started yelling about Obamagate.

We had not quite five years of retirement together, the wife and I.
I retired at the end of February, 2015.
She died this year on February 21st.
She had retired a year earlier than I, fearing an early death and disliking the job she then had.
We were so in love, every day, all day.
We were happy, cooped up together all the time.
We loved each other's company.
I so miss my sweet wife.

Masks off?
Pittsburgh flipped from red to yellow yesterday, on the governor’s color coded scheme.
Riverside Park, where I went for today's walk, was the most crowded I’ve seen this season.
Exactly two people wore masks, which makes me wonder if they are actually sick.
Just a couple days ago everybody there wore a mask, including me.
The marina is well packed today with boats, and lots more were on the water.
A large parking area is reserved for vehicles with boat trailers and it was full.
There is a public landing and it was constantly in use with people putting boats into or taking them out of the Mon.
I have never seen a nest but the Canadian geese that have been hanging around for more than a month are outnumbered now by their own brown-feathered young.
On the other hand, traffic on 88, Brownsville Road, 18th Street, Carson street, and most of the others I drove today was still absurdly light for a Saturday afternoon.
Most retailers still closed and I guess the bars on Carson can’t open yet.

All over the world . . . .
. . . . politicians are drawing back from or rejecting lockdowns because, they say, their countries just can't afford it.
They can't afford to hide at home waiting for a vaccine.
Not just Brazil, but India, for two examples.
If you go to work you might contribute to the spread of the disease and the misery and death it causes and, heck, you might even die yourself, though that's much less likely.
If you don't go to work you lose your home or your car, you and your children get tossed into the street, or maybe you just starve.
In most of the world, nobody is sending you a relief check, nobody is declaring an eviction holiday, nobody is providing low interest loans you don't even have to pay back if your business jumps through the right hoops.

Coronavirus and The Blacklist
The NYC lockdown stopped them shooting in the middle of an episode.
So they used animation for the unshot scenes.
Great idea, except the music was awful noise and louder than the dialogue.
Really, really annoying.
This is a complicated show with complex plots.
You need to hear the dialogue.
Also, Liz lost a lot of fans. And maybe the show did, too.

Supreme Court appears poised to let states keep 'faithless electors' out of the Electoral College
The electoral college is a blot on democracy. The Supreme Court shouldn't make it worse
Of course, punishing them after the fact does not invalidate their votes, and the punishments are not such as to deter anyone serious.
Some state laws do purport to invalidate the votes of faithless electors, but I don't know how that works out in reality.
Some state laws forbidding faithlessness neither punish it nor invalidate faithless votes.

The Supremes dare not just shit-can the EC in favor of direct popular election of the president since that would reveal the nudity of the King who professes to wear robes emblazoned, "I am an honest jurist. I only enforce what the Constitution actually says, making it prevail always in all things. My vote never reflects my judgement of what is desirable or best in defiance of what the Framers gave us. Oh, my, no. Never that."
However thin the robes may seem.
Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh asked during the argument in the Washington case whether the court ought not to be guided by what he called “the avoid-chaos principle of judging.”
I imagine the remark greeted with much hilarity. But likely not. Notoriously humorless, these robed bureaucrats.

Given the history of our Ubu Roi, how do you feel about this?
Given the history of Trump's products and projects, his bankruptcies, his university, his steaks, his booze, and his habit of refusing payment to hapless contractors.
Recall his so far unended string of obtuse predictions regarding the course of the virus and the value of the various quack remedies he has endorsed.
Recall his continuing refusal to provide testing necessities disguised as delays that have gone on since January.
Recall what Dr. Bright revealed, his positively dumbfounding interference in medical efforts to find effective treatments that diverted millions of dollars and much time and effort to a quack remedy, later proven both useless and harmful, that he insisted doctors employ in treating patients.
And now consider his abysmal stupidity (Clorox! Lysol! UV light!) and lunatic assumption he is qualified to control this huge research undertaking involving thousands of professionals whose scientific judgement he will ignore and whose science-based recommendations he will thrust aside.
Operation Warp Speed
I say this represents the ever-deepening corruption and sabotage, whether intended or not, of a huge portion of the American scientific effort to deal with the virus.
And it scares the shit out of me.

My mom passed this morning
Lorraine Auclair died at 9 am CDT in the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison, ND.
She was pretty far into Alzheimer's and hadn't conversed or shown signs of recognition in some time.
My brother Chuck called to tell me, and then I spoke with his wife Nancy.
Mom was dressed this morning and seemed fine, as usual. She was sitting peacefully in a chair in a sun room. People checked on her a couple times and noticed she seemed pale. She was unresponsive and remained so when moved to her bed.
She had just turned 94 earlier this month.
She will be cremated in Bismarck and sent to a cemetery in Paxton, Massachusetts, where my father, Joseph Auclair, has awaited her since he was cremated and buried after dying at 83 in 2001.
When he died many attended a funeral service at the cemetery, but since then everyone of their generation, siblings and their spouses on both sides and even their cousins, has died.
Those of us of the next generation who would wish to can't travel in the face of the virus, and some are unable anyway.
She was Catholic.
Say a prayer.

See? Reality and those who study it are all against him.
Or it's a goddam deep state plot.

Western PA is yellow, today
This writer grossly exaggerates the difference made by this change of stage along the path to rollback as complete as we will get.
Back to business: How will life be different under Gov. Wolf’s yellow phase?
As southwestern Pennsylvanians wake up today, the nightmare of shelter-in-place orders and sweeping business closures will be a cautionary memory.
So our long statewide nightmare is over? Really?
Gov. Tom Wolf last week promised to bump counties including Allegheny, Butler, Washington and 10 others into the “yellow phase” of his reopening plan on May 15, which eases social gathering guidelines and permits some businesses, including in-person retail, to reopen.
The yellow phase is something of a twilight zone, neither fully closed nor open.
On Friday, it’ll be OK to go outside if people continue to practice social distancing.
It’ll be OK to gather for weddings or funerals if there are fewer than 25 people.
It’ll be OK to go shopping, although stores may have reduced hours and occupancy.
And it’ll be OK to go to work if employers follow building safety protocols, although county and state leaders insist that those who can work from home continue to do so.

Just in case.

Why lockdowns are crumbling
The Duce claimed from the start the virus was a hoax, or the panic was a hoax, or both were a hoax, a giant propaganda campaign by Democrats and enemy media aimed at bringing him down by wrecking the economy.
More recently this has morphed into accusations the Chi-Coms - possibly with the collusion of Joe Biden - deliberately released the virus on the world to bring him down by hanging tens and hundreds of thousands of bodies around his neck and simultaneously wrecking the US economy.
And now the enemy media are giving more coverage, and more sympathetic coverage, to the ideas the economy is being wrecked, the wreckage has to be stopped, and the only way to do that is to roll back the lockdowns.
Why?
The Democrats and their media are doing this because they have realized the damage to the economy caused by their lockdowns was getting to be too great, so it’s time to back off.
But of course they continue to blame Trump for the rollback being too slow, too unorganized, too deadly, and too fast, all at the same time.
The media handling of the bug and the positions of their Democratic masters and even the fundamental facts of the virus’s birth in and release from China are all part of a vast global plot to stop Trump this November.
Oh, wait. Did I forget to blame Obama, too, and the Deep State? And what about the millions of illegal aliens whose votes made it appear Hillary won the mandate of the people in 2016? Oh, well. Hannity or Alex Jones or maybe Giuliani will explain all that.
After all, from the beginning the Deep State, the Clintons, Obama, the Democrats, the Lame Stream Media, illegal aliens, the EU, foreign governments, the US Federal Reserve Banks, hosts of others too numerous to mention, and even Pope Francis and the Vatican have sought to discredit, smear, delegitimate, and force Blessed Trump, God’s Anointed, from office with fake news and hoaxes, from claiming Obama’s inaugural crowds were bigger than Trump’s to the whole Russia thing, to the Confederate monuments thing, to the Ukraine thing, and finally to the Coronavirus thing.
From the beginning, absolutely everybody has been out to get him and frustrate the democratic will of the real American people, straight Christian Evangelical white people living mostly in the trailer parks of the South and Appalachia and their sympathizers all over the country.
It’s all a hoax, and has always been a hoax. Especially the parts that are true.

Obamagate? At worst it's a Flynngate.
All they've got so far to be the worst political crime in history is the "unmasking" of Flynn.
And this is a rehash of a scandal cooked up by the Trumpists in the midst of Russiagate, trying to delegitimate the origins during the campaign of what later became the Muller investigation.

White House dumps it on the states, again, with new CDC doc on rollback
The original CDC how-to document was 63 pages of detailed instructions.
What there is now is a short list of loose guidelines with no actual instructions.
The first, if followed by the states, would have meant the feds were responsible for what they did and how well or badly it worked.
The second is Trump washing his hands.

McConnell: the virus fiasco is all on Obama
McConnell the other day: Obama didn't leave us a plan so it's his fault.
Riposte:
Obama left you a plan that Trump ignored and an office devoted to dealing with any pandemic that he abolished.
And Trump had two years to build his own plan and his own staff.
He built no plan and organized no staff.
For the first months of the pandemic Trump said it was a hoax though everybody told him otherwise, and refused to take action.
McConnell today: Well, shucks.

Trump: testing is bad
What he actually said to the cameras, paraphrased:
More cases is bad.
Do more testing and you have more cases.
Do less testing and you have fewer cases.
QED.
What is he talking about?
Does he believe in some weird variant of Christian Science? If you think you're sick you're sick and if you don't you aren't?
Or is he really saying this?
More cases known to Americans and making me look bad is bad.
Do more testing and you have more cases known to Americans and making me look bad.

Ringing bells, many and loud
Oran under lockdown in The Plague is in so many ways, right down to details of everyday life, similar to America - and probably any country at all, really - under lockdown in the face of Covid-19.
Isolation, quarantine, the suspension of wakes and funerals, the overwhelming of hospitals, funeral homes, and cemeteries, the end of so much of normal daily life, work-related or not.
It all feels so contemporary.

The offense of Coronavirus globalism
It is the rise of Virus Nationalism.
People get upset about American producers shipping PPE, masks, ventilators, and the like to buyers overseas.
And others also get upset when products related to the struggle to deal with this virus are made in their own country for shipment to buyers in other countries.
People like Trump often argue protectionism makes sense at least for anything related to national security if not across the board.
And of course Trump has notoriously claimed without challenge than trade in anything at all is a national security matter.
Lately a kind of instinctive and worldwide Trumpism has emerged regarding medical goods related to the virus.
And it is undermining the global effort, as well as economic globalism and multinationalism in general.

A stupid policy
Michigan Police Will Arrest Anti-lockdown Protesters Who Brandish Guns
Police warn that while open carry of firearms at the capitol during a political demonstration is lawful they will suppress and arrest people for brandishing.
They still decline to construe open carry during a heated demonstration on capitol grounds as per se brandishing within the meaning of the law and so a criminal act.
That still sends dangerous mixed signals to demonstrators and puts police in a dangerous position, not allowed to keep weapons out of the demonstration and the capitol in the first place but required to go among angry, screaming loonies armed to the teeth and, in the midst of chaos, arrest them and take them away.
This sets up the police, the demonstrators, and state officials going about their business for violence and disaster.
They should interpret open carry during any sort of demonstration at the capitol as per se brandishing and hence unlawful.
They should so advise demonstrators and those planning demonstrations.
They should stop armed demonstrators outside the capitol and require them to disarm if they want to continue to the capitol, and to turn aside otherwise.
Have your confrontations with these militia terrorists outside the capitol and before the most heated moments inside the capitol.
Move the danger outside the capitol and minimize it by keeping the time and place of challenging armed would-be demonstrators to disarm or disperse off camera, so far as possible.

The 1619 Project
There is a current of American political and historical thought that makes race conflict the center and even the motor of American history.
At least to an extent, this reputedly is so of the Times' 1619 Project.
All that about race goes a very long way to making all but totally invisible the role of class conflict.
Think of the current fixation of Democratic and "lame stream" media on the disproportionate adverse impact of every ill and harm related to the Coronavirus and to societal and governmental efforts to deal with it.
The disparities noted are invariably racial.
But who does not see that they would still exist if we were a racially homogeneous country?
And how could we fail, in that case, to see that these are disparities of impact by social class and occupation?
That the homeless and the outcast, the hands-on and manual laborers among the working class, the small business people teetering on bankruptcy and poverty, are on the wrong end of this stick, as of so many others?
Including on the wrong end of unchecked and unrecognized criminal violence by the police, for example?
There have been repeated favorable mentions of the project on Morning Joe, and today there was an extended discussion of it.
I came in late to the show and only caught a few of the last moments of that discussion.
Joe S seemed uncomfortable with the topic or some issues related to it.
