Best thing? Lie.

We can't handle the truth.

Apart from giving added power to smaller states in the choice of president, the only reason for the existence of the EC is to take the decision out of the hands not only of the people but even of the states, their governors or legislatures.

The choice of the electors is clearly supposed to be as ad lib as the votes of legislators or the choices of the president.

They are not mere messengers or mouthpieces for anyone.

The very concept of a faithless elector rests on completely, and even willfully, missing the point.

Subsequent amendments don't affect the argument.

But nobody wants to accept the system prescribed by the constitution.

The only honest way out is by passing an amendment.

But, honest or not, we need a way out.
