The dead do not suffer.
They have no regrets and no remorse.
Deterrence apart, vengeance apart, economy apart, infallible prevention of future crime apart, the death penalty is a foolish error.
The instant the criminal is dead he is is proof against all harm, all pain.
There is no afterlife, no Purgatory, and no Hell, and so if retribution is really what you want you must make a Hell on Earth, devils included.
Life in prison, but with prison as close to a living hell as you can stomach.
You can lock up a maneater, if you want, at great expense, and torture him until he finally dies at the end of as long a life as possible, all the while risking harm and death to other captives, guards, and spectators.
Or you can just kill him and have done with it.
Transportation for life is second best.
