Russia names Nato as threat to security
Pat Buchanan and others like him will doubtless blame this on the NATO expanders, much as many historians used to blame the rise of Hitler and even WW2 on Clemenceau and Versailles.
Bill Shirer never bought that.
Germany had a choice and chose dictatorship and war rather than republicanism and peace.
With the fall of Communism Russia had a choice.
Russia could have accepted a place within NATO, at worst refusing to play along with policies it thought foolish, like France.
It chose instead a brutal policy aimed at recovery of lost eminence and power, playing great power politics in a much more dangerous way.
Cold War II is by no means entirely or fundamentally the fault of the West.
