The Democrats are wrong on late term abortion but otherwise entirely right on anti-clericalism and the sexual revolution.
They are infinitely better on the economy, the safety net, and social democracy.
Though far too globalist they are less bellicose and less madly Zionist than the GOP.
Their feminism is excessive and their anti-racism is flatly racist and a public menace.
And gay marriage, but not civil unions, over-shoots the mark.
But they are still better on all those things than Republican clericalism, British-Isles tribalism, and sexual reaction.
The Democrats are wrong on many other things like global warming, Islam, immigration, free trade, and the death penalty.
But they are not so much the captives of their extremists as the GOP is of theirs.
And both sets of extremists are nuts.
As to the constitution, the thing is inherited junk that is harder than most to alter, and significantly favors the right.
Hence though both sides read the thing dishonestly the Democrats have been, since 1937 at the latest, far more successful in dishonestly reading the constitution in favor of their progressive and, since WW2, other liberal commitments.
At the core of each party's ideological identity is its position on issues of control of the economy for the protection of workers and the public interest.
Favoring such things is the historic and present heart of progressivism, the real litmus test of liberalism and of the party.
Interestingly, on such things the Democrats would be better if they could move a little to the left, but would be much worse if they moved as far left as their professional left, let alone their radicals and Marxists, would want.
Opposing progressivism is the historic and present heart and litmus test of conservatism that the Republicans cannot renounce.
And they are already very nearly as far to the right as their most extreme right wing elements would desire.
