Some of that endures even today, and the influence on pop culture so feared by our classe politique that we got the HUAC and the McCarran Committee has made unchallengeable heroes of The Hollywood Ten and of particular individuals among them, and unspeakable villains of everyone who favored or took part in anti-communist activities then or who does not condemn those activities now.

Recall that during the Cold War membership in the CPUSA was illegal and people were prosecuted for it.
The Smith Act forbidding advocacy of the violent overthrow of the US government, under which many Communists were convicted, was ultimately emasculated by a liberal Supreme Court, to President Eisenhower's dismay, though criminalization, prosecution, and persecution of Communists were vigorously supported in the beginning by a majority of US liberals as well as conservatives.

On the face of it, Islam would seem to pose no similar threat.
While some, like Voltaire, find its strict monotheism less intellectually offensive than Christian Trinitarianism, most liberals and atheists find Islam incredible and jejune as a doctrine, and many secularists find it historically and in our own time far more dangerous to unbelievers and other-believers.
And yet, people do convert to Islam.
And lately they have begun to do it specifically in order to throw in their lot with Jihad.
Some on the left have even pointed out that Islam and Jihad are for many young people the new forms of ideology and action taken by activist hatred of the West of the sort that used to drive left wing terrorism and guerrilla war.
Update 111415.
Radical Islam is less tempting for everyone else, but more tempting for blacks.
In America, immigrants apart, that will be the threat.
