Fate

Neither Frollo nor Hugo is pagan enough to attribute his, Esmeralda's, and the book's debacle to fate, alone.

That he was a priest not made for celibacy, that she is a Gipsy, that she loves Phoebus, he repeatedly attributes all to fate, but also to the will of God.

Never a hint how the two might be related.

Reading The Hunchback.
