They're pointless since, while they can show you are not infected right now they cannot say you won't be an hour from now or a day.
So, hey, no real point in breaking legs in a rush to get them out in large numbers, eh?
Nor in widespread testing, at all.
But they can also say you are infected right now, something you need to know and others around you need to know and medical and other authorities need, for sure and rather urgently, to know.
And, really, how long you can expect that negative result to be good depends entirely on how likely you are to be infected within an hour, or a day, or however long.
And that depends on the density of the infected in the population your are exposed to and how often you are exposed, as well as the density of those resistant to infection.
For those of us pretty deep in lockdown, a negative result would be good for a while, provided we stay deep.
And that you are right now negative is good news for anybody living in close quarters with you, anybody whose chief risk of exposure is exposure to whatever you've got.
