Luke

In Luke, along about Chapter 10, things get a lot less pastoral and a lot more apocalyptic.

The Kingdom will come before all now alive will pass away (9:27)

Those who do not become disciplines, do not have faith in Jesus and his message, will all be on the wrong end of judgment.

The fate of Sodom will look good to them (10:12).

Earlier in Luke, Jesus says of an unauthorized person casting out demons in his name, "whoever is not against you is for you" (9:49, 50).

Now he says of those who do not accept him, his message, and his role, "whoever is not with me is against me" (11:23a).

"And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God; but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God" (12:8,9).

At Luke 21:7-28, Jesus speaks of the signs, mostly wars, calamities, and extraordinary natural disasters, of the coming of the end times.

At verse 28, he says to his followers,

"Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

And then, still in Luke 21,

29 Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees;

30 as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.

31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place.

33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

34 Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly,

35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth.
