When you leave it to the patriotism of the media . . . .

A federal official secrets act would go a long way to preventing this sort of thing.

But it might have untoward consequences and would certainly be unconstitutional – though, as to that, who really cares, eh?

So we leave it to the patriotism of the media to keep their mouths shut.

But the media are competitive businesses and, like any competitive businesses, will do all they lawfully can to beat each other out in the marketplace, and will do their best to push that envelope, alter the law, and even ignore it, from time to time.

After all, when weighing the public good against the demands of successful business . . . .

Oh, and recall there is no constitutional or legal basis for the journos’ claims they have some sort of privilege to conceal their sources.

They’re only hoping if they tell that whopper often enough people will just finally throw up their hands and let them have their way.
