A county sheriff, he had no authority to enforce immigration law, but he for decades and despite orders to stop it would stop people, apparently with adequate reason, on suspicion of being in the country illegally, hold them on that account and often on no other, and try to (?) hand them over to immigration authorities.
He defied court orders to knock it off.
That is why he was charged with criminal contempt, for which he faces punishment.
He is a hero to anti-immigration enthusiasts, including white nationalists, and lovers of Trump's wall such as, er, Trump.
He seems to be an object of actual hatred and much vilification from the left.
He is not being punished for doing his job.
Apparently, he is being punished for illegally doing somebody else's job.
