What if Republicans had got their way?

Especially Texas Republicans?

What if the government rejected all responsibilities for anything that it did not bear in the 18th Century, as conservatives of their ilk demand?

No FEMA, no money for National Guard assistance, no assistance from the Navy, the Coast Guard, or any military, no gigantic relief and reconstruction package in the tens of billions, nothing from the feds at all for damage from Harvey.

In the 18th Century, the general government had no responsibility for and no involvement in dealing with natural disasters.

Before the Progressive Era, the feds would have done nothing, have been able to do nothing, have been expected to do nothing about such things.

And back when Obama needed money for hurricane mess on the East Coast many seriously conservative Republicans voted no.

Mike Pence in 2005 demanded cuts in Medicare to pay for federal money to deal with Katrina damage in Louisiana.

The weather folks are now saying by the time this is over some areas in or around Houston will have had 60 inches of rain from Harvey.
