Is the left split on this one?
The pro-Castro, pro-communist left lamenting his loss and
singing his praises while the democratic left and those committed to a more moderate and selective socialism assess him less positively?
Some even judging him, on balance, in the negative?
Among his sins were government-sponsored anti-Semitism, a mismanaged
economy leading to a worsening condition of the poor, and significant offenses
against democracy.
His nationalizations and expropriations of property earned
him the love of the more radical left but did not have quite the desired economic effect
and made his regime many enemies, as did his absurd flirtations with Castro,
Iran, and numerous enemies of the US – which also earned the affection of such
folk as Oliver Stone.
On the whole, a clown?
Hard to say.
