Rick Santorum notwithstanding, I doubt anyone anytime soon
will want to marry a sheep.
But we have always had people interested in one form or another
of plural marriage.
Do I mind if Mormons or Muslims or others practice
polygamy, right here in these United States?
Not really.
The persecutions of the Mormons in the 19th
Century were inexcusable religious wars, when you come right down to it.
And very frank violations of the spirit of the First
Amendment, to my mind, both as to establishment and as to free exercise.
And of the letter, if there is or was any federal law prohibiting
plural marriage.
Do I mind if worshippers of The Goddess or others practice polyandry?
No.
But I made that up. Do they do that? Or want to? Does anyone
else? I have no idea.
Just the other day I saw something on the web by some female,
feminist professor defending polyandry, though.
But she probably doesn’t like polygamy.
Just guessing.
PS.
This doesn't mean I would support, sympathize with, or join a revolutionary Mormon struggle to free Utah for polygamy.
I really just don't care much whether or not polygamy is permitted, though I consider any time and effort spent on enforcement of such a prohibition to be wasted.
I think much the same of suppression of prostitution.
